Which is the Best Quality Indian Teakwood for Furniture?
Types of Teakwood used in India for Furniture
Central Province Teak: Also known as Indian teak, offers various benefits and is recognized for its natural durability, as well as qualities such as weather resistance, moisture resistance, and pest resistance. Central province teak has high-quality natural oils, which make it extremely moisture-resistant. Indian teakwood ensures long-lasting durability, as the natural oils in the teak keep termites and insects at bay. Moreover, Indian teak also requires little maintenance as the high oil contentwhich can otherwise cause the growth of wood Mold.
Burma Teak: Also known as the king of woods, Burma teak is found in an ancient tree that is found exclusively in the forests of Myanmar and Burma. Burma teak is famous for its superior quality and aesthetic appeal. Burma teak has a rich golden hue, which signifies elegance and warmth. Burma teak also has great density and durability as it has a tight grain structure and contains high natural oil. These properties make it highly resistant to infestation by insects, decay, and rot. Burma teak is extremely durable, which makes it a good choice for indoor as well as outdoor furniture. Burma teak requires little maintenance, like regular cleaning, occasionalsealing, and oiling. Also, avoid direct sunlight to keep its shine intact.
Nilambur Teak (Kerala): Exclusively found in the Nilambur region of Kerala, Nilambur teak is a very high-quality teakwood with a beautiful golden-brown shade. The fine grain of this beautiful teak adds to the visual and aesthetic appeal of different kinds of furniture as well as flooring. This teak wood is also perfect for intricate designs and can be mouldedto the needed measurement easily. Very high-quality, fine-grain, golden-brown shade. Nilambur teak is also known for its longevity and durability, as it has great density and high content of natural oils. This teak is also pet resistant and weather resistant, and keeps looking new for many years with minimum maintenance.
AfricanTeak: As the name suggests, African teak is native to Africa.African teak has been well known for its superior qualities, like high density and resistance to rot. African teak is high in natural oils, and its period of growth is from 15 to 35 years. African teakwood dries very quickly and is less durable than Burma teakwood. African teak has a pale brown hue and is a good option for outdoor furniture for its ability to withstand heavy weather conditions. African teak requires less maintenance than other teakwood. Since African teak dries quickly and does not have oily resins, and thus unable to preserve its natural water repellent Properties. African teak is ideally suggested for furniture where less durability & less aesthetics are needed.
Quality of Teak wood:
While there is no formal certification for teakwood , there are also different grades of teak wood, such as Grade A and Grade B/C.Grade A teakwood is also called heartwood, as it comes from the heartwood of mature trees that are more than 30 years old. Grade B teakwood is also called sapwood, as it comes from the outer heartwood and younger trees. While Grade A has a rich appearance with a glossy surface and golden-brown colour, Grade B is light coloured with less shine. Grade A is highly durable and resistant to decay, rot, and water repellent as it has high natural oils. Grade B has fewer natural oils and is less resistant to rot and decay. Grade A is preferred for outdoor furniture, while Grade B is preferred for indoor furniture. Grade A is more expensive than Grade B.However, teakwood always comes in an assortment& it is extremely hard to guarantee the part from where the wood is sourced.
What quality of teak do we use?
Since we source recycled teak, it always comes in an assortment. We commit that a mixed variety of grades will be provided, which we sort out manually. The grade is not only decided by the quality but also by the sourcing.
If any particular grade of teak is needed entirely for your furniture, we can do that as well. Moreover,if you decide to use central province teak or Burma teak, it will hardly make any difference in terms of strength, durability, or aesthetic appeal of the furniture which is why we suggest the best option is to go by manual sorting from the mix of the wood rather than sticking to one type of wood.
Advantages of Teak wood Beds Over Other Wooden Beds:
Durability & Longevity: Teakwood is naturally hard, which gives it great strength and durability. The natural density and hardness of teakwood make it resistant to warping, so the beauty of teak remains intact with time. Therefore, teakwood beds can last for many years. For example, for more than 50 years or many generations.
Termite & Pest Resistance: Teak wood has a high content of natural oils, which makes it naturally termite and pest resistant. Hence, it is difficult for termites and wood boring insects to infest teak wood. These oils are harder for insects to digest, so they stay away, which prevents teak wood from damage by wood boring insects. This property of teak wood eliminates any need for chemical treatment and making teak wood very low maintenance.
Moisture Resistance: Teak wood is naturally resistant to moisture, which is particularly ideal for Indian weather, especially coastal cities. The high density and natural oil content of teak wood act as a water repellent and prevent warping, rot, and water damage during monsoon and humid weather conditions in coastal Indian cities.
Aesthetic Appeal: Teak wood beds have a rich, golden-brown hue with straight grain patterns, which adds a touch of warmth and luxury. Teak wood beds with their honey golden brown color add a distinct charm to any décor. Moreover, this golden-brown color deepens with time and looks even more beautiful. Teak wood ages beautifully over time, adding to the aesthetic appeal of any bedroom.
Value for Money: Teak wood may be costlier upfront, but a teak wood bed proves cost-effective in the long run due to its various properties. For example, weather resistant, moisture resistant, pest and rot resistant, high durability, low maintenance, and long life. On the contrary, other wooden beds may be cheaper but can be prone to damage by moisture or wear and tear. This can cost frequent repairs, which will be expensive in the long run.
Easy to refurbish & make it look new: Since teak wood is naturally high in natural oils, it has the least wear and tear. The tight grain and natural oils present in teak wood prevent cracking and decay due to insect and water damage. Hence, teak wood is easier to refurbish and can be kept looking new for many years.
What is the Right Size When You Customise a Teakwood Bed?

Customised size for Indian homes
Ideally, we suggest 66 x 78 inches mattress size as that tends to be the right size for most Indian homes today. Moreover, one can customize a teakwood bed according to their storage preferences like hydraulic storage or drawers.
Type of storage possible in teak beds:
Hydraulic storage
Full hydraulic opens from the top: These types of beds have a hydraulic storage option beneath the mattress. With the hydraulic mechanism, the bed frame can be lifted gently and easily for storage. The hydraulic storage option is best for storing extra items like seasonal clothing, beddings, or heavy suitcases. Hydraulic beds go well with any type of décor and help to keep your room looking organized and neat.Today’s hydraulic beds look sleek and offer easy operation rather than bulky storage beds of older times.
Drawer storage
4 drawers – 2 on either side: Teakwood beds with 4 drawers, with 2 on either side, offer easy access for storing things. Different items can be stored easily on these drawers, like beddings, pillows, mattresses, and frequently used items. These pullout drawers offer convenience to easily take out things when needed and also make the environment clutter-free.
Combination of hydraulic & drawer storage
Will have front opening drawer & back hydraulic: While the front opening drawer can be used to store frequently used items like books, and clothing, the back hydraulic can be used to store heavier items like beddings, mattresses, or suitcases. The front-opening drawer is a convenient option for storing and taking out things easily. The combination of a front-opening drawer and back hydraulic helps in the efficient optimization of space while making the room look organized.
